Discover more about Tree Mountain

Tree Mountain, officially titled 'Tree Mountain—A Living Time Capsule—11,000 Trees, 11,000 People, 400 Years,' is a monumental earthwork and land reclamation project located in Ylöjärvi, Finland. Created by environmental artist Agnes Denes, the project was initiated in 1982 and completed in 1996. The site, a former gravel pit, was transformed into an elliptical mountain measuring 420 meters in length, 270 meters in width, and 38 meters in height. Eleven thousand trees were planted by eleven thousand people from various countries, each tree dedicated to someone, following a precise mathematical pattern derived from the golden section and the pineapple/sunflower system. This pattern evokes ancient earthworks, blending human intellect with the majesty of nature. The project was announced by the Finnish government at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 as Finland's contribution to alleviating global ecological stress. Tree Mountain is intended to be a protected area for four centuries, eventually evolving into a virgin forest. Each person who planted a tree received a certificate, acknowledging them as custodians of the trees, a document inheritable for twenty or more generations. The artwork aims to restore the environment, promote clean groundwater, and symbolize humanity's commitment to ecological, social, and cultural well-being. While the forest has thrived, becoming so lush that the original pattern is now difficult to perceive, Tree Mountain remains a powerful statement about our responsibility to the planet and future generations.
