Discover more about Väinö Linna Square

Väinö Linna Square, or Väinö Linnan aukio in Finnish, is a central gathering place located within the old Finlayson factory area in Tampere. This square is more than just an open space; it's a piece of Finnish history and culture. The Tammerkoski rapids' industrial landscape, of which the square is a part, was classified as a nationally significant built cultural environment by the Finnish Heritage Agency in 2009. The square is named in honor of Väinö Linna, a highly regarded Finnish author known for his works such as "The Unknown Soldier" and the "Under the North Star" trilogy. Linna himself worked in the Finlayson factory before becoming a celebrated writer. The square's surroundings include notable buildings like the Werstas Labour Museum and the Mehiläinen Private Hospital. One of the oldest structures is the six-story Kuusivooninkinen factory, dating back to 1837, which was Finland's first modern factory building. A granite statue, "The Portrait of Väinö Linna" (1995) by sculptor Raimo Heino, is displayed on the outer wall of the hospital. The square was renovated in 2005, marking a new chapter in the area's history after Finlayson's textile production ended in the mid-1990s. Today, Väinö Linna Square serves as a venue for various events, especially during the summer. It is easily accessible and close to other attractions, making it a must-visit destination in Tampere. Whether you're interested in history, literature, or simply soaking up the local atmosphere, Väinö Linna Square offers a rich and engaging experience.
