Discover more about Tampa Riverwalk

The Tampa Riverwalk, a 2.6-mile (4.2 km) open space, has transformed Tampa's downtown waterfront into a vibrant destination. Its origins trace back to the 1970s when Mayor Bill Poe envisioned a park and walkway to revitalize the aging industrial area. However, the project was stalled due to funding issues and lack of interest from subsequent administrations. In 2002, mayoral candidate Pam Iorio pledged to revive the Riverwalk, and construction began, gaining further momentum with a $20 million fundraising campaign in 2006. A significant milestone was reached in 2010 with the opening of the redeveloped Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Tampa Museum of Art, and the Glazer Children's Museum. Bob Buckhorn, Iorio's successor, continued to champion the Riverwalk, leading to the completion of a continuous path in 2014. The Riverwalk connects a multitude of attractions, parks, and cultural venues. Notable points of interest include the Tampa Bay History Center, Amalie Arena, the Tampa Convention Center, Rivergate Tower, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, Water Works Park, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, the Glazer Children's Museum, and the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. The Riverwalk hosts numerous community events, including festivals at Curtis Hixon Park and the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, during which the pirate ship Jose Gasparilla moors at the Riverwalk. Visitors can enjoy walking, biking, and scooter rentals along the path. Water taxis provide service to nearby areas. The TECO Line Streetcar runs parallel to the Riverwalk, connecting downtown and Ybor City. The Riverwalk is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring smooth paths, ramps, accessible entrances, restrooms, and seating areas. Wheelchair rentals are available.
