Château du Wineck: A Sentinel of the Vines

Château du Wineck, a ruined castle gracefully positioned in the commune of Katzenthal, in the Haut-Rhin département of France, stands as a testament to centuries of Alsatian history. Constructed primarily during the 13th and 14th centuries, this historic monument offers visitors a unique glimpse into the region's rich past, combined with stunning views of the surrounding vineyards and landscapes. The castle's origins trace back to around 1200, with significant construction occurring throughout the 13th century. Despite these fortifications, the castle was destroyed by fire in the 15th century and subsequently abandoned, falling into disrepair for centuries. In 1866, the Société pour la Conservation des Monuments historiques en Alsace (Society for the Conservation of Historic Monuments in Alsace) acquired the castle, recognizing its historical significance. However, it wasn't until 1972 that significant restoration efforts began, led by the Société pour la Restauration et la Conservation du Château de Katzenthal (Society for the Restoration and Conservation of the Château de Katzenthal). These efforts breathed new life into the ruins, preserving them for future generations. The castle's architecture is dominated by its impressive keep, a 20-meter high structure with an almost square plan. The keep served as both a dwelling and a lookout point, providing panoramic views of the surrounding area. Today, a modern external staircase on the western side of the keep allows visitors to access the first floor, leading to a 19th-century entrance. Inside, a modern interior staircase provides access to the higher levels. Originally, the second floor was accessed via a high door in a gothic arch, leading off a walkway in the south wall to the roof of the residence to the west of the keep. On the third floor, a latrine remains, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the castle's inhabitants. The original parapet has been restored, and a gargoyle adorns the south-eastern corner of the roof. The castle's horseshoe-shaped enceinte, which enclosed the keep from the north, still retains parts of its round walk. To the west of the keep was the residence, while the stables were located to the east. A second enceinte opposite the castle sheltered the lower courtyard. The moat surrounding the castle was cut into the rock on the north side, further enhancing its defenses. Today, Château du Wineck is not only a historical monument but also a cultural center. The castle houses a small museum, open seasonally on Sundays and public holidays, showcasing artifacts and exhibits related to the castle's history and the surrounding region. The Friends of Wineck Association offers tours, providing visitors with insights into the castle's past and the restoration efforts that have preserved it.
