Discover more about Sanctuary of Mont Saint-Odile

The Sanctuary of Mont Sainte-Odile, also known as Hohenburg Abbey, crowns one of the most prominent peaks in the Vosges mountain range, offering breathtaking views across the Alsace region. This sacred site, dedicated to Saint Odile, the patron saint of Alsace, has been a place of pilgrimage and spiritual significance for centuries. Founded in approximately 690 AD by Adalrich, the Duke of Alsace, for his daughter Odile, the abbey quickly became a center of religious and cultural life. Legend has it that Odile was born blind and was rejected by her father. However, she miraculously regained her sight upon being baptized, leading to her acceptance and eventual sainthood. The Duke then gifted her his castle, Hohenburg, which she transformed into a monastery. Throughout its history, Mont Sainte-Odile has experienced periods of prosperity and destruction. The original abbey was ravaged by fire multiple times, leading to its reconstruction in 1050. In the 12th century, Abbess Herrade of Landsberg significantly contributed to the abbey's intellectual reputation by creating the "Hortus Deliciarum," an illuminated encyclopedia encompassing theology, philosophy, and the arts. Sadly, this invaluable work was lost in a fire in 1870. Today, the Sanctuary of Mont Sainte-Odile welcomes visitors from all walks of life. The abbey complex features several notable structures, including the Basilica, the Chapel of the Cross (the oldest part of the convent), the Chapel of Tears, and the Chapel of Angels. The Tomb Chapel houses the sarcophagus of Saint Odile, adorned with 18th-century paintings depicting her life and miracles. The cloister, with its serene inner garden, provides a tranquil space for contemplation. One of the most striking features of Mont Sainte-Odile is the "Mur Païen" or Pagan Wall, an enigmatic ancient structure that encircles the mountain's plateau. Constructed from approximately 300,000 stone blocks, the wall stretches for over 10 kilometers and reaches up to 3 meters in height. Its origins and purpose remain a mystery, with theories ranging from a prehistoric defensive structure to a sacred enclosure. Hiking along the Pagan Wall offers a unique opportunity to connect with the area's rich history and natural beauty. Beyond its historical and religious significance, Mont Sainte-Odile is also a haven for nature lovers. Numerous hiking trails wind through the surrounding forests, offering stunning views of the Alsace Plain, the Black Forest, and the Vosges Mountains. The "Sentier des Merveilles" (Trail of Wonders) is a popular family-friendly hike that features animal sculptures and other surprises along the way. The Sainte-Odile spring, located below the abbey, is another point of interest, believed to have been created by the saint herself and said to possess healing properties for eye ailments. Visiting Mont Sainte-Odile is an immersive experience that engages the senses and nourishes the soul. The panoramic views, the ancient architecture, and the spiritual atmosphere combine to create a truly unforgettable destination. Whether you are seeking a place of pilgrimage, a historical adventure, or a peaceful retreat in nature, Mont Sainte-Odile offers something for everyone. Don't miss the opportunity to explore the various chapels within the abbey, each adorned with unique mosaics, frescoes, and gilding. Take a moment to reflect in the Chapel of Tears, where Merovingian tombs can be found. Visit the sundial dating back to the 17th century and admire the panoramic views from the Great Terrace. For those interested in hiking, the area surrounding Mont Sainte-Odile offers a variety of trails to suit all levels. Discover the Way of the Cross and the Grotto of Lourdes, or take a tour of the rock on which the convent is built. Explore the remains of the old abbey at Niedermunster, or venture along the famous Pagan Wall. Mont Sainte-Odile is easily accessible by car, with free parking available on-site. During peak season, it is advisable to arrive early to secure a parking spot. Alternatively, public transportation is available, with bus line 257 serving the Mont Sainte-Odile from Obernai during the season. The sanctuary is open daily, with varying hours for the chapels. Admission is free, although donations are welcome to support the preservation of this historical site. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a religious pilgrim, or simply seeking a breathtaking view, Mont Sainte-Odile is a must-visit destination in Alsace. Consider visiting the nearby Source Sainte-Odile, located below the abbey. Legend says that Sainte Odile made the spring gush out by striking a rock with her stick in order to help an old blind man, and the miraculous spring would thus have effects on the diseases related to the eyes. Take the time to walk around the outside of the abbey, where you will find an impressive cemetery of religious figures. The abbey also functions as a hotel, so you can stay on site if you wish. Be sure to check out the gift shop for souvenirs and religious items. Whether you are drawn to Mont Sainte-Odile for its religious significance, its historical importance, or its natural beauty, you are sure to have a memorable experience.
