Centre Bonlieu: Annecy's Cultural Heart

Centre Bonlieu is a major cultural complex located in the heart of Annecy, France, serving as a dynamic meeting point between the city and its old town. Situated next to the Pâquier and facing Lake Annecy, this historical site offers a blend of modern architecture and diverse cultural activities.The building's history is rich and varied. Originally a convent in the 17th century, it later became an arms factory in the 18th century before transforming into a cotton mill. In the 19th century, it was converted into a hotel, acquired by Eugène Verdun in 1864. Since 1981, it has served as the city's cultural center, undergoing a complete renovation.The architectural design, a blend of the old and the new, was conceived by Maurice Novarina and Jacques Lévy, who chose to incorporate concrete and glass. The result is a striking structure that complements Annecy's urban landscape. The center houses a municipal library, service areas, a nursery, shops, the tourist office, and a forum. The Bonlieu Scène Nationale Annecy, comprised of three performance halls, is the core of the center, hosting a rich and frequently updated cultural program with artists from various backgrounds.Centre Bonlieu is not just a cultural venue but also a community hub. It hosts various events, including art exhibitions, the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, and holiday celebrations.
