Discover more about Place de la Bourse

Place de la Bourse, initially named Place Royale, is a magnificent square in Bordeaux, France, representing a pivotal moment in French urban design. Constructed between 1730 and 1775 by architects Jacques and Ange-Jacques Gabriel, it was the first open square in France, symbolizing the city's break from its medieval past. Commissioned during the reigns of Intendant Boucher and Tourny, the square was designed to showcase an equestrian statue of King Louis XV. Over time, the statue was replaced by a Tree of Liberty during the Revolution, and later by the Fountain of the Three Graces in 1869, which remains a focal point today. The buildings surrounding the square exemplify neoclassical architecture, housing the Palais de la Bourse (now the Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and the Hôtel des Fermes (National Customs Museum). In 2004, the square underwent a significant renovation, including the installation of the Miroir d'Eau, the world's largest reflecting pool. This innovative feature creates a stunning visual effect, mirroring the surrounding architecture and captivating visitors. The Place de la Bourse is not only a visual masterpiece but also a vibrant public space where locals and tourists gather to enjoy the city's beauty.
