Pey Berland Tower: A Gothic Ascent to Bordeaux's Best Views

Ascend the Pey Berland Tower for breathtaking panoramic views of Bordeaux and a glimpse into the city's rich history.

4.5

The Pey Berland Tower, the freestanding bell tower of the Bordeaux Cathedral, offers panoramic views of the city after a climb of 233 steps. Built in the 15th century, it stands apart from the cathedral due to the marshy ground, which couldn't support the weight of a bell tower directly attached to the cathedral.

Discover more about Pey Berland Tower

Rising 66 meters above Place Pey Berland, the Pey Berland Tower is a testament to Bordeaux's rich history and architectural evolution. Constructed between 1440 and 1500, the tower served as a separate bell tower for the Saint-André Cathedral, as the cathedral's foundation was too weak to support a traditional bell tower. Archbishop Pey Berland initiated the tower's construction, lending his name to the iconic structure. The tower's Gothic style features a square base and intricate sculptures, including gargoyles and chimeras. A gilded statue of Notre-Dame d'Aquitaine, added in 1863, crowns the tower, watching over the city. Inside, a narrow spiral staircase leads to the top, where visitors are rewarded with stunning 360° views of Bordeaux, including the Church of St. Michel, Place de la Bourse, and the Garonne River. Over the centuries, the tower has served various purposes, including a fodder depot, a lead shot factory, and even housing. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting visitors who come to admire its architecture and enjoy the panoramic vistas. Access to the tower requires a pre-booked, time-stamped e-ticket.
