Discover more about Château de Germolles

Nestled in the heart of Burgundy, near Chalon-sur-Saône, the Château de Germolles offers a unique journey back to the era of the Dukes of Burgundy. This remarkable site, labeled a "Maison des Illustres," began as a fortified grange in the 12th and 13th centuries before being acquired by Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, in 1380. He gifted it to his wife, Margaret of Flanders, who transformed the austere building into a luxurious country residence. Margaret enlisted the finest artists of the Burgundian school, including Claus Sluter and Jean de Beaumetz, to create a refined and comfortable living space. While the palace at Dijon has lost much of its original architecture, Germolles stands as a testament to the splendor of the ducal court on the eve of the Renaissance. The castle is a historic monument since 1989. Visitors can explore the remnants of the original fortress, including the entrance towers, the cellar, and the lower chapel. The tour also includes the grand reception room (salle d'honneur), the ducal chapel, and the private apartments, showcasing the decorated paving tiles and heraldic frescoes. The grounds are planted in the English style. Guided tours, led by the owners, provide insights into the castle's history and ongoing archaeological discoveries.
