Discover more about Fontaine dédiée à l'Amiral Bruat

The Fontaine dédiée à l'Amiral Bruat stands as a prominent landmark in Colmar, France, honoring Admiral Armand-Joseph Bruat (1796-1855), a distinguished naval officer and Colmar native. The city decided to erect a monument in Bruat's honor after his sudden death at sea. Auguste Bartholdi, a local sculptor, was commissioned to create the monument, which was inaugurated on August 21, 1864. The fountain is located in the heart of the Champ de Mars, a spacious park serving as a green space for Colmar. The bronze statue of the Admiral stands tall, gazing towards the horizon with a spyglass in his right hand. The base features allegorical figures representing the four continents: Asia, America, Oceania, and Africa, symbolizing Bruat's extensive travels. The original fountain was the first in Colmar to have a continuous jet of water. The fountain was destroyed by the Nazis in 1940, but the bronze statue was restored in 1958 and placed on a new fountain designed by sculptor Choain and architect Porte. The sandstone heads from the original fountain are preserved at the Bartholdi Museum. Albert Schweitzer wrote that the head of the African figure inspired him to become a doctor in Africa.
