Discover more about Escalier du Roy d'Aragon

The Escalier du Roy d'Aragon, a registered historical monument, is one of Bonifacio's most iconic landmarks. Legend claims that the troops of the King of Aragon carved the staircase in a single night in 1420 during the siege of Bonifacio. However, the staircase was more likely built by Franciscan monks to access a freshwater well, the Saint-Barthélemy well, at the base of the cliffs. The well is no longer in use. The staircase consists of 189 steps carved into the limestone cliff. As you descend, you're treated to panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, the island of Sardinia, and the dramatic Corsican coastline. The path at the bottom runs a few meters above the water, offering views of the turquoise sea. The descent and subsequent climb are physically demanding, so visitors should be in good condition. Closed-toe shoes are required, and helmets are available for use. Children who complete the climb receive a diploma.
