Discover more about Fort du Mûrier

Fort du Mûrier, or Fort Randon, stands as a testament to 19th-century military architecture. Constructed between 1875 and 1878, this fortress was part of a defensive network conceived by Général Séré de Rivières to protect France following the Franco-Prussian War. Positioned at 420 meters above sea level in Gières, it guarded Grenoble's eastern approaches, particularly from Chambéry. Capable of housing over 542 soldiers and a significant artillery complement, the fort played a strategic role through World War I, even serving as a prison camp. The army abandoned it in 1978. The commune of Gières acquired the fort and began restoration in the 1990s. Today, Fort du Mûrier has been transformed into a cultural space, hosting exhibitions, shows, and musical events. Guided tours are available, especially during European Heritage Days. The site also houses a collective of visual artists.
