Porte Saint-Laurent: Grenoble's Historic Gateway

Porte Saint-Laurent, located in the Saint-Laurent district of Grenoble, is a striking example of 17th-century defensive architecture. Constructed in 1615 under the order of the Duke François de Bonne de Lesdiguières, it was part of the fortifications of the Bastille hill. The gate allowed passage to the Grésivaudan valley and Savoy via the right bank of the Isère River.The exterior facade, particularly the side facing La Tronche, is the most interesting. It features a machicolation protecting the vaulted passage and two bretèches designed to defend the pedestrian gates. The gate also retains its heavy 19th-century wooden leaves. Until 1864, all the gates of Grenoble were closed from 10 PM to 7 AM, except for the Porte Saint-Laurent, which opened at 5 AM.Today, the Porte Saint-Laurent stands as a testament to Grenoble's rich past. Visitors can admire the intricate details of its design and soak in the lively atmosphere of the surrounding area, filled with cafes and boutiques. The gateway is conveniently located near the banks of the Isère River, offering picturesque views.
