Grosse Horloge: La Rochelle's Iconic Gateway

La Grosse Horloge, or Great Clock, is an iconic monument in La Rochelle, France, that bridges the gap between the bustling old port and the city center. This impressive structure began its life in the early 12th century as a fortified gate in the city's original defensive walls. Known initially as the Parrot or Perrot Gate, it controlled access to the city. As La Rochelle expanded, the gate lost its primary defensive purpose. In the late 15th century, townspeople requested a public clock, leading to the installation of a clock and bell in 1478, transforming the gate into the city's belfry. Over the centuries, the Grosse Horloge underwent several architectural changes. In 1672, the original two openings, one for pedestrians and one for carriages, were merged into a single arch. In 1746, the pepper-pot roofs were replaced by a dome adorned with pilasters, small columns, and cherubs holding globes and flags, giving it the appearance it has today. Today, the Grosse Horloge stands as a testament to La Rochelle's rich medieval and maritime heritage. Visitors can admire its architecture and its prominent clock face. The square on the city side of the gate, Place des Petits-Francs, features a statue of Eugène Fromentin, a painter and writer from La Rochelle.
