Discover more about Royal Gate

The Royal Gate, or Porte Royale, is an imposing historical landmark that welcomes visitors to La Rochelle. Constructed between 1716 and 1724 under the direction of engineer René-Jacob de Tigné, it represents the most ambitious architectural project of La Rochelle's new fortified enclosure, launched in 1689 under Vauban's guidance. The gate was intended to be a grand entrance worthy of the most powerful monarch in Europe, opening onto the road to Paris. During the reign of Louis XV, the gate served as a prison for enemy sailors when the Lantern Tower reached full capacity. These prisoners left their mark on the walls, engraving testaments and images of their ships. Although the city's fortifications were decommissioned around 1900, the Royal Gate was classified as a historical monument in 1909. In 1920, modifications were made to accommodate increasing car traffic, with bypasses created on either side of the gate. The city of La Rochelle acquired the Royal Gate in 1953. After a period of neglect, restoration efforts began in 2015 by the Association of Friends of La Rochelle, supported by the Fondation du Patrimoine. Today, the Royal Gate stands as a symbol of the city's strength and resilience, inviting visitors to explore its surroundings and delve into La Rochelle's rich cultural heritage.
