Discover more about Grosse Horloge

La Grosse Horloge, or Great Clock, is more than just a timepiece; it's a symbol of La Rochelle's rich history and enduring spirit. This iconic landmark stands as a captivating gateway between the old port and the city center. Originally constructed in the early 12th century as the Porte du Perrot, it served as one of the main gates in the city's first defensive wall. Over time, it transitioned from a defensive structure to a civic monument. In 1478, the gate was transformed with the addition of an octagonal bell tower, topped with a campanile to house a clock bell. Extensively remodeled in the 18th century, the medieval gate adopted a more classical style. The lower passage was vaulted, and the medieval arch was replaced with a basket-handle arch, giving it a wider and more decorative appearance. Today, visitors can walk through the archway and explore the historic passageway beneath the clock tower, admiring the architecture and views. The Grosse Horloge has also housed an archeological museum related to the Knights Templar. A tram line even passed under the Horloge from 1901-1929, connecting the port to Place de Verdun. The Grosse Horloge was classified as a Historic Monument in 1978, recognizing its heritage and historical value.
