Discover more about Calanque de Port-Miou

Calanque de Port-Miou, nestled in Cassis, is the easternmost calanque between Marseille and Cassis and the only one located within the Cassis commune. This 1400-meter-long inlet, characterized by its narrow, winding shape and towering cliffs, has a rich history dating back to ancient times. The name 'Port-Miou' is derived from the Latin 'Portus Melior,' meaning 'the best port,' reflecting its historical use as a safe harbor. Historically, Port-Miou was a significant site, with evidence suggesting its use as a harbor since antiquity. It was later exploited for its high-quality limestone, which was quarried from the 1900s until 1981 by the Solvay company. The remnants of this industrial past, including old quarries and loading docks, are still visible today, adding a unique dimension to the natural landscape. The Calanque is also known for a fascinating geological feature: an underwater river that flows into the inlet, originating from the Sainte-Baume massif. This underground source contributes to the unique ecosystem of the calanque. Today, Port-Miou functions as a marina, accommodating around 550 boats. It also serves as the starting point for numerous hiking trails into the Calanques National Park, including the popular routes to Calanque de Port-Pin and Calanque d'En-Vau. The 'Petit Prince' trail, an easy walk around the Port-Miou peninsula, offers informative signs and commemorates the area's connection to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, as a plane wreck was initially mistaken for his. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views, explore the unique flora and fauna, and appreciate the blend of natural beauty and historical significance that defines Calanque de Port-Miou.
