Discover more about La Vieille Bourse

La Vieille Bourse, undeniably Lille's most beautiful monument, stands proudly between the Grand Place and Place du Théâtre. Constructed from 1652 to 1653 by Julien Destrée, it initially served as the city's stock exchange, a place for merchants to conduct business. The building's architecture reflects the wealth of the time, showcasing a Flemish Renaissance style with intricate details. The quadrangle structure comprises 24 identical houses surrounding an inner courtyard. The facades are adorned with garlands of fruits, horns of plenty, and richly ornamented pilasters. Lions of Flanders sculpted on the portals recall Lille's belonging to the Netherlands. Today, the courtyard is a public space where book vendors display their wares, chess enthusiasts challenge each other, and, in the summer, tango evenings fill the air. It's a place where history and culture intertwine, offering a delightful experience for locals and tourists alike. The Vieille Bourse was classified as a historical monument in 1921 and 1923.
