Discover more about Pont de Pruniers

The Pont de Pruniers, gracefully arching over the Maine River, is more than just a bridge; it's a tangible link to the region's past. Constructed in 1908, it initially served as a vital part of the Petit Anjou railway, facilitating transport between Angers and Candé until 1947. The bridge stretches 150 meters in length, its metal structure resting on two sturdy piles. However, the Pont de Pruniers is best known for its significance during World War II. In August 1944, as Allied forces advanced, German troops destroyed all bridges spanning the Maine River, except for the Pont de Pruniers. Two local men informed the American forces about the bridge, making it the only remaining access point to Angers. The Americans crossed the bridge on August 9th, taking the German forces by surprise and contributing significantly to the liberation of Angers. Today, the Pont de Pruniers is a peaceful pedestrian and cycling bridge, offering stunning views of the Maine River and the surrounding landscape. Plaques and steles commemorate the events of 1944, honoring the American troops and the French Resistance. Recent renovations have ensured the bridge's preservation for future generations. Crossing the Pont de Pruniers provides not only a pleasant experience but also a moment to reflect on the courage and sacrifices made during the liberation of France.
