Discover more about Château de l'Arthaudière

The Château de l'Arthaudière, nestled in the commune of Saint-Bonnet-de-Chavagne, stands as a testament to centuries of Dauphiné history. Originally a medieval stronghold dating back to the 13th century, the castle evolved through the hands of noble families like the Arthauds, who gave it its name, the La Portes, and the Marcieus. The oldest part of the Château is the round tower, dating back to the 13th century. A rectangular keep was added in the 14th century. During the Renaissance, the castle underwent significant alterations, including the addition of a gallery and a chapel. A spiral staircase was installed in the 17th century. The grand stables, constructed in an L-shape, are another prominent feature. Over the centuries, the Château transitioned from a defensive structure to a refined residence, mirroring the changing times. While the south wing was destroyed in the 18th century, the terraced gardens were likely landscaped around the same time. In 1991, it was listed as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture. Today, the Château de l'Arthaudière welcomes visitors to explore its grounds and restored outbuildings. The former stables host the exhibition "L'Arthaudière, une seigneurie rurale," which chronicles the castle's history, architecture, and environment. Three rooms in the outbuildings host temporary art exhibitions. The gardens are open to the public year-round. Various events, including concerts, markets, and children's activities, take place throughout the summer.
