Discover more about Cascade du Déroc

Cascade du Déroc is an enchanting waterfall located near Nasbinals in the Lozère department of France, within the Aubrac region. This natural wonder is part of the Massif Central, one of France's largest mountain ranges, known for its breathtaking beauty. The waterfall is formed by the Gambaïse stream, an affluent of the Bès river, and the outflow from Lac des Salhiens, which converge at a basalt ledge. Over millions of years, the Truyère River carved a deep gorge through the Massif Central, creating a series of waterfalls, including Cascade du Déroc. The waterfall cascades down approximately 32 meters (105 feet) over a basalt cliff, a result of ancient lava flows and the uplift of the Aubrac region. The name 'Déroc' comes from the Occitan word 'darròc,' meaning 'rocky,' a fitting description of the area's natural rock formations. Visitors can explore a small cave behind the waterfall, featuring a ceiling of basalt prisms or 'organs'. Historically, this cave is rumored to have served as a refuge for brigands. The waterfall is accessible year-round and is particularly stunning after rainfall or in winter when adorned with snow. A short, easy hike from the Route des Lacs (D52) leads to the falls, making it a popular destination for families and nature enthusiasts. While visiting Cascade du Déroc, take the time to explore the nearby village of Nasbinals, known for its granite and basalt architecture and its significance as a stop on the Route de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.
