Discover more about Pierre-Baudis Japanese Garden

The Pierre-Baudis Japanese Garden, officially named Jardin Japonais Pierre-Baudis, is a captivating escape located in the Compans-Caffarelli district of Toulouse. Recognized as a 'remarkable garden of France,' this 7,000 square meter park was established in 1981, during the tenure of Mayor Pierre Baudis, who drew inspiration from similar gardens he visited, notably one in Dublin. The garden was officially named after him on May 11, 2016. Within a larger 10-hectare green space, the Japanese Garden provides a serene contrast to its modern surroundings. Designed as a place for meditation, the garden incorporates botanical varieties from East Asia and elements reminiscent of Kyoto gardens from the Muromachi and Edo periods (14th to 17th centuries). The garden features a mineral garden, a central lake, and symbolic elements like Crane and Turtle Islands, along with nine carefully placed rocks. Visitors can also admire a tea pavilion, a dry waterfall, Japanese steps, and a distinctive red wooden bridge leading to an islet that allegorically represents paradise. A bust of Taisen Deshimaru, a Zen master who established numerous Zen dojos in France in the 1970s, is also a notable feature. The garden received the National Grand Prize for Flowering in 1993.
