Matira Beach: Bora Bora's Public Paradise

Matira Beach, often hailed as the most beautiful beach in the world, is a stunning stretch of coastline located at the southern tip of Bora Bora. Unlike many of Bora Bora's beaches that are privately owned by resorts, Matira Beach welcomes everyone with its accessible public space and free access. The beach extends for approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) from the site of the old Hotel Bora Bora to Matira Point. The soft, powdery white sand gently slopes into the warm, shallow waters of the lagoon, creating an ideal environment for swimming and snorkeling. The crystal-clear turquoise waters are home to a variety of marine life, including colorful fish and coral reefs, particularly around Point Matira. Palm trees fringe the beach, providing natural shade and enhancing the idyllic setting. Matira Beach is not only a place for relaxation but also a hub for various activities. Visitors can enjoy water sports such as jet skiing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. For a more laid-back experience, sunbathing and picnicking are popular options. The beach's name is believed to originate from a whaleboat that arrived in Polynesia in 1790. Today, Matira Beach continues to hold a special place in the island's history and is the finishing point of the annual Hawaiki Nui, a world-famous outrigger canoe race.
