‘Āfareaitu Waterfall: Moorea's Lush Cascade

The 'Āfareaitu Waterfall, nestled in the southeastern part of Moorea near 'Āfareaitu village, is a captivating natural wonder. Actually two waterfalls, the more well known cascades from the Putoa Stream, dropping roughly 262 feet, while the other, fed by the Vaioro Stream, plunges over 328 feet. Both falls create natural pools at their base, inviting visitors to take a refreshing dip. The journey to the falls is an experience in itself, with trails winding through lush greenery. The hike to Putoa Waterfall is about 2 miles roundtrip, while the path to Vaioro Waterfall is around 1 mile. Along the way, you'll encounter diverse flora, including mango trees, coffee plants, wild orchids, and vanilla. The trails can be a bit rough, rocky, and slippery in sections, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Historically, the 'Āfareaitu Valley holds cultural significance, with remnants of ancient Polynesian temples (marae) scattered throughout.
