Discover more about Akhaltsikhe (Rabati) Castle

Akhaltsikhe Castle, or Rabati Castle, stands as a testament to the rich and turbulent history of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia. Founded in the 9th century as Lomsia, the castle has been a strategic and cultural crossroads for centuries. Its name changed to Akhaltsikhe, meaning "New Fortress," and later gained the moniker Rabati, derived from the Arabic word for a fortified place. Throughout its history, the castle has been under the control of various empires and rulers, including Georgians, Ottomans, and Russians, each leaving their mark on its architecture and cultural landscape. In the 13th-16th centuries, it served as a residence for the Jakeli family, who governed the area as an independent principality. The Ottomans significantly rebuilt the castle in the 17th and 18th centuries, adding features like a mosque and Turkish baths. The castle was captured by the Russian Empire in 1828, after which it slowly fell into disrepair. In 2011-2012, a large-scale restoration project revitalized the castle, transforming it into a major tourist attraction. Today, the Rabati Castle complex is divided into two sections: a modern lower section with shops, cafes, a hotel, and restaurants; and an upper historical section that includes the Ahmediyeh Mosque, an Orthodox church, the Jakeli family castle, and a history museum. Visitors can explore the castle's walls and towers, offering panoramic views of Akhaltsikhe and the surrounding area. The Samtskhe-Javakheti History Museum, located within the castle grounds, houses a collection of over 25,000 artifacts related to the region's history.
