Discover more about Okros Tsikhe Fortress

Okros Tsikhe (Golden Fortress) is one of the largest and most impressive fortresses in Georgia, located in the southern region of Samtskhe-Javakheti. Situated at approximately 1,700 meters above sea level near the village of Gomaro, the fortress occupies a strategic position atop a rocky mount in the Kvabliani valley. Its name, 'Golden Fortress,' reflects its historical significance and the warm glow its stones emanate in the setting sun. Constructed in the late 13th to early 14th centuries, likely during the reign of Beka I Jakeli, Okros Tsikhe served as a vital stronghold for the Jaqeli dynasty, who ruled the Samtskhe Principality. The fortress was part of a comprehensive defensive network designed to protect the region. Its location allowed for the monitoring of enemy movements across vast expanses of land. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Okros Tsikhe played a crucial role in defending against the Ottoman Turks. The fortress's formidable walls, some rising over 10 meters high and two meters thick, combined with its strategic location, rendered it nearly impenetrable. The chronicles of Meskhetian Davitni mention the fortress, highlighting its importance during this period. In 1578, Dedisimedi, the wife of Prince Qaikhosro Atabagi, bravely defended the fortress against invading forces. The fortress features a tactical architectural design with multiple tiers and buffers to enhance its defenses. The entrance was fortified with massive boulders and an additional wall, showcasing the strategic foresight of its builders. Even after the Ottoman conquest, Okros Tsikhe remained in operation for another two centuries, known by its Turkish name, Altunkal'a. Today, Okros Tsikhe stands as a symbol of Georgia's resilience and architectural prowess, offering visitors a tangible link to the nation's rich and storied past.
