Discover more about Ujarma fortress

Nestled in the Sagarejo Municipality of Kakheti, Georgia, Ujarma Fortress is a historic site that offers a glimpse into the region's storied past. The fortress, located 40 km from Tbilisi on the road to Telavi, is perched on a high hill on the right bank of the Iori River near the Gombori Pass. Founded in the 3rd century AD by King Aspacures I of Iberia, Ujarma rose to prominence as a royal residence. During the 5th and 6th centuries, under King Vakhtang Gorgasali and his son Dachi, the fortress experienced its golden age, with the construction of citadel walls, defense towers, a residential building, and a church. Ujarma served as a crucial defense against Arab and Persian invasions and even housed the royal treasury in the 12th century. Despite being destroyed by Arab invaders in the 10th century and later suffering from Mongol invasions, Ujarma was restored in the 12th century by King George III. However, its importance gradually declined, and it eventually became a small settlement. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the once-mighty fortress, including the ruins of walls, towers, water reservoirs and a restored church. The still-operating Church of Saint Razhden offers a place for reflection, while the fortress's strategic location provides stunning views of the Gombori mountains and the Iori River valley. Archaeological excavations have also unearthed interesting artifacts, such as glass and bronze bracelets, rings and wine-making tools.
