If you are driving from Tbilisi, take the E117 highway towards Akhalkalaki. Continue on this road for approximately 120 km until you reach the junction for Vardzia. Turn left onto the road that leads to Vardzia and follow the signs for Khertvisi Fortress. The fortress is located about 10 km west of Vardzia. The road is generally well-maintained, but be cautious of potential potholes and local traffic. Parking is available near the fortress.

Public Transportation

To reach Khertvisi Fortress via public transport, take a marshrutka (minibus) from Tbilisi to Akhaltsikhe. The journey takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Once in Akhaltsikhe, find a local marshrutka heading to Vardzia. You will need to inform the driver that you want to stop at Khertvisi Fortress. The cost for the marshrutka from Tbilisi to Akhaltsikhe is around 10 GEL, and the fare from Akhaltsikhe to Khertvisi is approximately 2-3 GEL. Note that public transport may have limited schedules, so check the times ahead of your trip.
