Getting There

  • Car

From Tbilisi, take the E117 highway heading east towards Telavi. After approximately 100 km, you will reach Telavi. From Telavi, follow signs towards Akhmeta on the E117 road. Once in Akhmeta, continue on the road towards Omalo, which leads into Tusheti National Park. Be prepared for rough and steep terrain as the road narrows and becomes unpaved after passing the village of Dartlo. The drive may take around 4-6 hours depending on road conditions. Ensure your vehicle is suitable for off-road driving.

  • Public Transportation

From Tbilisi, take a marshrutka (minibus) to Telavi. This journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Upon arriving in Telavi, you will need to transfer to another marshrutka heading to Akhmeta. Once in Akhmeta, look for marshrutkas or shared taxis to Omalo. Note that these vehicles may only depart when full, so there may be some waiting time. The total journey can take 5-7 hours, depending on connections and waiting times.

  • Guided Tour

Consider joining a guided tour from Tbilisi or Telavi specifically to Tusheti National Park. These tours often include transportation, a guide, and sometimes meals. They provide a hassle-free way to explore the region while ensuring you reach Tusheti safely and learn about its unique features. Prices vary based on the tour provider, so check in advance for availability and costs.

  • Horseback or Hiking

Once you reach Omalo, you may wish to explore further into Tusheti by horseback or hiking. Guided horseback tours are available, and local guides can be hired to take you through the trails of the national park. This adds an authentic experience to your visit but requires advance booking and may incur additional costs for the guide and horse rental.
