Often referred to as Zarni Castle or Meliskari, this fortress was erected between the 15th and 17th centuries as a stronghold for the Abashidze feudal family. Perched atop a cliff overlooking the village of Chkheri and the Chkherimela River Valley, the castle served as a vigilant watchtower, guarding the domain of its noble owners. Chkheri Castle's history is etched with tales of battles and resilience. Most notably, it was the site of the Battle of Chkheri in 1774, where Georgian Kings Solomon I and Erekle II decisively defeated a Turkish-Ottoman force. The castle also witnessed fierce resistance during the Russian incursion of 1810 when its defenders bravely resisted, leading the Russians to burn the surrounding village. Today, Chkheri Castle stands in a half-ruined state, yet its imposing structure still evokes a sense of its former grandeur. The fortress comprises an upper and lower castle.
