Discover more about Tbilisi Zoo

Tbilisi Zoo, established in 1927, is a green oasis nestled in the Vere River valley in central Tbilisi. As the oldest and largest zoo in Georgia, it houses a diverse collection of animals native to the Caucasus region and exotic species from around the globe. Initially, the zoo was divided into sections featuring local Caucasian fauna, animals from the former USSR, exotic species, and agricultural animals. At its peak in the 1970s, Tbilisi Zoo was home to over 1,000 animals and welcomed more than 500,000 visitors annually. However, the zoo faced significant challenges during the economic collapse and political unrest of post-Soviet Georgia in the 1990s, leading to a decline in funding and animal welfare. In 2015, a devastating flood caused by the Vere River resulted in the loss of many animals and significant damage to the zoo. Despite this tragedy, the zoo has shown resilience and continues to operate, providing a sanctuary for animals and educational opportunities for visitors. Today, visitors can see a variety of animals, including white lions, Asian elephants, white rhinoceros, and diverse bird species. The zoo also features an Exotarium with colorful fish and reptiles. Tbilisi Zoo is involved in conservation projects, supporting endangered species in Georgia such as the Red deer, Bezoar goat, and West Caucasian tur. The zoo depends on funding from the Tbilisi City Hall and public support to continue its mission of animal protection and conservation.
