Located in the historic center of Maastricht, the Basilica of Saint Servatius stands as a testament to centuries of faith and architectural evolution. Constructed over the grave of Saint Servatius, an Armenian missionary and bishop who died in Maastricht around 384 AD, it is considered the oldest church in the Netherlands. The present-day basilica is thought to be the fourth church built on this sacred site. The basilica's architecture is primarily Romanesque, with influences from Gothic and Baroque periods. The nave was built in the 11th century, followed by the transept in the late 11th century, and the choir in the 12th century. The exterior features the East choir and the interior of the westwork contain architectural sculptures. Inside, visitors can admire the shrine of Saint Servatius, an example of Meusean art, and the church treasury with its collection of relics, reliquaries, liturgical objects, and textiles.
