The castle's remains are considered the oldest preserved stone castle in the Allgäu region. Built before 1078, it was first mentioned as "castrum Hopfen" in 1322. From around 1200 to 1322, the castle served as the seat of the provost's office of Füssen. Over the centuries, the castle faced destruction during the Peasants' War and the Thirty Years' War. By the early 18th century, much of what remained was demolished. Excavations between 1999 and 2009 helped clear the area and make the wall remains visible again. Today, visitors can explore the ruins and enjoy panoramic views of the Ammergau Alps, Tannheim mountains, and Lake Hopfen. The site is a popular hiking destination for families, with trails leading past the ruins. Inside the castle walls, there's ample space for a picnic while soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.
