Discover more about Festspielhaus Baden-Baden

The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden is more than just a performance venue; it's a cultural landmark steeped in history. As Germany's largest opera and concert house, with a seating capacity of 2,500, it attracts renowned artists and discerning audiences from across the globe. The building's unique architecture tells a story of transformation. Originally constructed in 1904, it served as Baden-Baden's central railway station, replacing an earlier station from 1845. The station connected Baden-Baden to the city center until the branch line's closure in 1977. In the mid-1990s, Viennese architect Wilhelm Holzbauer designed the reconstructed opera house, integrating it with the former railway station's neo-classicist structure. The result is a harmonious blend of old and new, where the station's historic facade now serves as the entrance hall to a modern concert hall. The acclaimed Munich-based physicist Karlheinz Müller ensured ideal acoustic values were incorporated into the design. The Festspielhaus officially opened on April 18, 1998. It transitioned from public funding to become Europe's first privately financed opera and concert company. From 2003 to 2015, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden Cultural Foundation presented the annual Herbert von Karajan Music Prize. Today, the Festspielhaus continues to host a diverse range of events, including opera, ballet, classical concerts, and festivals. It also houses essential facilities, including the box office, the Aida restaurant, and Toccarion, a dedicated space for children's music.
