Discover more about Großer Rachel

Großer Rachel, also known as Great Rachel, is more than just a mountain; it's a symbol of the Bavarian Forest National Park's commitment to natural processes. As the park's highest peak, it provides a rewarding hiking experience with stunning vistas. From the summit, hikers can see as far as the Alps on clear days. The mountain's history is intertwined with the surrounding forest's ecological changes. In 1995, a large portion of the forest was affected by a bark beetle infestation. In line with the park's philosophy, no interventions were made, allowing the forest to regenerate naturally. This has resulted in a diverse landscape of both standing dead trees and new growth, offering a unique perspective on ecological succession. The Großer Rachel's name has Celtic origins, translating to 'rough,' which aptly describes the mountain's rugged character. The area is steeped in local legends, adding to its mystique. The nearby Rachelsee lake is said to house the banished soul of a wicked noblewoman. The summit is marked by a wooden cross and a mountain rescue hut. While the Waldschmidthaus, a mountain hut offering food and drinks, is located near the summit, overnight stays have not been possible since 2011 due to fire regulations. The hut is currently undergoing renovations.
