    Discover more about Roman Baths

The Roman Baths, located in Sanssouci Park, Potsdam, embody King Frederick William IV of Prussia's longing for Italy. Built between 1829 and 1840, the ensemble is not a literal bathhouse but a collection of buildings inspired by Roman and Italian architecture. The architects Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Ludwig Persius designed the Roman Baths, while Peter Joseph Lenné designed the surrounding landscape. The complex includes a gardener's house, a gardener's assistant house, a tea pavilion, and the Roman Bath itself. The gardener's and assistant's houses evoke Italian country villas, while the tea pavilion resembles an ancient temple. The Roman Bath draws inspiration from ancient Roman villas. The rooms within, such as the atrium, impluvium, caldarium, and apodyterium, are named to evoke Roman villas and bathhouses. Vine-covered pergolas, arcades, and gardens connect the buildings. Frederick William IV, an admirer of Italian culture, used the Roman Baths as a museum for his Italian souvenirs. The ensemble served as a guest house. The Machine Pond, an artificial lake, adds to the picturesque setting. Today, the Roman Baths host special exhibitions, offering insights into 19th-century romantic architecture.
