Train
The most popular and convenient way to reach the Brockenhaus is via the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB), a narrow-gauge railway. Board the Brockenbahn steam train at Wernigerode, Drei Annen Hohne, or Schierke. A standard fare applies regardless of the boarding station. A one-way ticket for adults costs €38, and a round trip is €57. For children (6-14 years), a one-way ticket is €23 and a round trip is €34. The train drops you off right at the Brocken summit, a short walk from the Brockenhaus. Consider reserving seats, especially for groups of 8 or more, for a fee of €2.50 per person per direction.
Walking
For hikers, several trails lead to the Brocken summit from nearby towns. A popular route starts in Schierke, following the Brockenstrasse (approx. 2.5 hours). Another option is from Torfhaus via the Goetheweg (approx. 2-3 hours). Be prepared for a challenging ascent and variable weather conditions. Note that there are no access fees for hiking to the Brocken.
Bus
While there is no direct bus to the Brocken summit, you can take a bus to Schierke or Torfhaus and then hike or take the Brockenbahn. If you are an overnight guest in Schierke or Wernigerode, you may receive a guest card that allows free travel on public buses in the Harz region.
Parking
Private vehicles are not allowed to drive directly to the Brocken summit. If driving, park in Schierke at the "Am Winterbergtor" multi-story car park. Parking fees vary, but expect to pay around €2.50 for 3 hours. From there, take the Brockenbahn or hike. Alternatively, park in Torfhaus and hike to the summit.
