Chorin Abbey: A Gothic Masterpiece
Discover Chorin Abbey: A stunning example of Brick Gothic architecture nestled in Brandenburg's scenic Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve, offering history, culture, and natural beauty.
Nestled within the serene Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve, Chorin Abbey stands as a remarkable testament to early Brick Gothic architecture in Brandenburg. Founded in 1258 and relocated to its present site in 1273, this former Cistercian monastery boasts intricate ornamentation and impressive gable architecture that echo the grandeur of Cologne Cathedral, Paris, and Siena. Once a vital religious and political center, the abbey fell into disrepair after the Reformation, serving as a barn before being rediscovered by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the 19th century. Today, Chorin Abbey hosts cultural events, exhibitions, and guided tours, offering visitors a glimpse into monastic life and the architectural ingenuity of the medieval era. Explore the well-preserved ruins, wander through the landscape park designed by Peter Joseph Lenné, and immerse yourself in the tranquility of this historical landmark.
