Discover more about Chorin Abbey

Chorin Abbey, a captivating monument of Brick Gothic architecture, lies within the protected Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve, approximately an hour's drive northeast of Berlin. Founded in 1258 by the Margrave of Ascania and relocated to its current lakeside location in 1273, the abbey quickly became a significant religious and political hub in the region. Its construction marked the first instance of High Gothic architectural principles being fully realized in brick in Brandenburg, influencing numerous other church buildings in the area. The abbey's design, characterized by its filigree ornamentation and imposing gable architecture, draws inspiration from renowned cathedrals like those in Cologne, Paris, and Siena. The west facade, in particular, showcases a unique synthesis of the Cistercian order's architectural constraints and the margravial patrons' desire for representation. The intricate brickwork, featuring friezes adorned with lily, vine, and animal motifs, along with the detailed vault consoles, exemplify the exceptional craftsmanship of the era. Chorin Abbey played a crucial role in the history of Brandenburg, strategically positioned on the border with Slavic territories and serving as the home monastery of the House of Ascania. However, following the Reformation in 1542, the monastery was dissolved, and its buildings were repurposed, even serving as livestock barns. Over time, the site fell into disrepair until the 19th century when Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel recognized its historical and architectural significance. Schinkel's advocacy led to the preservation and partial reconstruction of the abbey, saving it from further ruin. He described buildings like Chorin Monastery as “the state's most precious jewels”. His efforts attracted artists, architects, and tourists, leading to a renewed appreciation for the site. The surrounding landscape park, designed by Peter Joseph Lenné, further enhances the abbey's picturesque setting. Today, Chorin Abbey stands as a testament to both its medieval origins and its 19th-century revival. Visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, including the east and west wings of the cloister, the abbot's house, and the remains of the church. Permanent exhibitions within the abbey delve into its history, architecture, and the daily life of the Cistercian monks who once resided there. An animated short film introduces viewers to the spiritual life of the Cistercians. The former brewery houses an exhibition on Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Chorin, with many digitized sketches for viewing. The former room for underfloor heating houses the exhibition on the so-called "talking" stones - which are a very special testimony to the time of construction. The east wing and former chapter house showcase the spiritual life of the monks. Throughout the year, Chorin Abbey hosts a variety of cultural events, including concerts, theater performances, and markets. The Chorin Summer Music Festival, held annually, has become a renowned event, drawing thousands of visitors to the abbey grounds. These events provide a unique opportunity to experience the abbey's atmosphere and acoustics in a vibrant and engaging setting. Beyond the abbey itself, the surrounding Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve offers opportunities for hiking, cycling, and exploring the natural beauty of the Brandenburg countryside. The nearby Amtssee lake provides a tranquil setting for relaxation and reflection. The region is also home to other historical sites and charming towns, such as Angermünde and Eberswalde, making Chorin Abbey an ideal base for exploring the wider area. Whether you are a history enthusiast, an architecture aficionado, or simply seeking a peaceful escape in nature, Chorin Abbey offers a captivating and enriching experience. Its blend of medieval history, architectural grandeur, and natural beauty makes it a must-see destination in Brandenburg. Visitors can also use the "Chorin 3D Monastery" app to digitally reconstruct the monastery complex at various points using a smartphone.
