    Grand Casemates Square, or simply Casemates Square, is more than just a central plaza; it's a vibrant tapestry woven from centuries of Gibraltarian history and culture. Located at the northern end of Main Street, it serves as the main entry point into Gibraltar's city center, welcoming tourists and locals alike.Originally, the square was a beach where Moroccan settlers first landed during the Moorish period. Over time, it was fortified and transformed, becoming part of the old Spanish town. The British further developed the area, constructing the Grand Casemates barracks in 1817, from which the square derives its name. For a time, the square served as a military parade ground and even a site for public executions, the last of which occurred in 1864.Today, Grand Casemates Square is a commercial and social hub. Following renovations in the 1990s, it blossomed into a lively space filled with shops, boutiques, restaurants, and bars.
