Discover more about Northern Defences

The Northern Defences, once known as 'The Jungle', represent a significant chapter in Gibraltar's military history. This extensive complex of tunnels, galleries, and fortifications was strategically constructed into the northern face of the Rock to protect Gibraltar from landward attacks. Originally developed during the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783), the defenses were further expanded in response to later conflicts, including World War II. Visitors can explore the intricate network of bastions, cannon emplacements, and underground passages that allowed troops to move securely and munitions to be stored safely. Key features such as the King's Lines and Queen's Lines offer breathtaking views of the Bay of Gibraltar and the surrounding landscape. The area also includes natural caves and geological faults that were incorporated into the defensive system. Recent restoration efforts have cleared debris and vegetation, making the Northern Defences more accessible and allowing visitors to appreciate the skills of the Royal Artificer Corps who carved these fortifications into the rock. Exploring the Northern Defences provides a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the challenges and ingenuity of defending this strategic location.
