Discover more about Apes Den

Apes' Den is a must-see attraction in Gibraltar, offering visitors the chance to encounter the famous Barbary macaques in their natural habitat. As part of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, Apes' Den provides a unique opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures, the only wild monkey population in Europe. The Barbary macaques, also known as Barbary apes, are a symbol of Gibraltar's natural heritage. Their presence on the Rock dates back to the early days of the British Garrison, with legends claiming they arrived via a subterranean tunnel from Morocco. Another legend says that if the macaques ever disappear, the British will leave Gibraltar. During World War II, Winston Churchill, concerned about the declining macaque population, imported additional animals from Morocco. At Apes' Den, visitors can observe the macaques' daily routines, social interactions, and playful antics. The monkeys are generally accustomed to human presence, but it's important to remember that they are still wild animals. Visitors are advised to observe them respectfully, maintain a safe distance, and refrain from feeding them, as it can harm their health and alter their natural behavior. Beyond the macaques, Apes' Den offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The well-maintained paths wind through the area, providing ample opportunities to see the monkeys up close and capture stunning photos. The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon when the monkeys are most active.
