Gorham's Cave, a captivating archaeological site on the eastern side of the Rock of Gibraltar, is a window into the world of Neanderthals and early modern humans. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, the Gorham's Cave Complex bears exceptional testimony to the cultural traditions and material culture of these populations over approximately 120,000 years. The cave itself is named after Captain A. Gorham of the 2nd Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers, who discovered it in 1907. The cave's location, a few meters from the Mediterranean Sea, was once approximately 5 kilometers inland due to lower sea levels during Neanderthal habitation. Archaeological excavations have revealed a rich history, with evidence of Neanderthal occupation up to around 28,000 years ago, making it one of the last known places inhabited by Neanderthals. Early modern humans also occupied the cave between 20,000 and 13,000 years ago.Today, visitors can explore the area and learn about the cave's significance through guided tours. While access to the cave's interior is restricted to protect the fragile archaeological deposits, a viewing platform at Europa Advance Road provides panoramic views of the World Heritage Site.
