Gibraltar Cable Car: Ascend to Panoramic Views

The Gibraltar Cable Car, a must-do attraction, transports visitors to the summit of the Rock of Gibraltar, offering unparalleled panoramic views and access to key landmarks. Built in 1966 by Swiss cable car experts, Von Roll Holding, the cable car was initially intended for military purposes but soon opened to the public. The base station is conveniently located near the southern end of Main Street, next to Alameda Gardens.The cable car journey takes approximately 6 minutes to ascend to the Top Station, 412 meters (1,352 ft) above sea level. During the ride, an audio tour guide provides historical background on the sights of Gibraltar. The Top Station complex features terraces offering views of the Strait of Gibraltar, Morocco, and Spain. Visitors can also find a restaurant, café, toilet facilities, and a souvenir shop at the summit.At the top, visitors can explore the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, encounter the Barbary macaques, and delve into Gibraltar’s military past with fortifications and tunnels. Key attractions include the Great Siege Tunnels and St. Michael's Cave, easily accessible from the Top Station. For those seeking a thrill, the Skywalk, a glass platform offering spectacular views, is a short walk from the top.The cable car operates continuously throughout the day, approximately every 10 minutes. The last extensive renovation took place in 1986, with the current cabins replacing the originals. In 2007, the Top Station was refurbished to include the Calpe Suite, a venue for weddings.
