North Bastion, historically known as Baluarte San Pablo (St. Paul's Bastion), stands as a testament to Gibraltar's enduring military significance. Located at the northern edge of the city, this fortification was crucial in defending against attacks from mainland Spain. Its origins trace back to the Giralda tower, constructed in 1309, which was later transformed into a robust bastion.Over the centuries, the North Bastion has been modified and strengthened by various powers, including the Spanish and British. After the British took control in 1704, they enhanced the defenses, recognizing the bastion's strategic importance. It played a vital role during the sieges of Gibraltar, particularly in 1727, when it withstood intense attacks. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved structure, appreciate the military architecture, and learn about the lives of the soldiers who once defended this crucial point.Today, the North Bastion is surrounded by reclaimed land, with Glacis Road running along its former glacis. Smith Dorrien Avenue separates it from the still largely intact curtain wall. The bastion now houses the Giralda Gardens and a pétanque club, offering a blend of history and recreation. The Government of Gibraltar has plans to further develop the site as a tourist attraction, improving access to the Northern Defences.
