Spur Battery, perched high within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, is a testament to Gibraltar's enduring military history. Its location on St. George's Spur provided expansive views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the distant coastlines of Spain and Morocco. In 1902, a powerful 9.2-inch Mark X breech-loading gun was mounted at Spur Battery. This gun, capable of engaging ships up to heavy cruisers, was part of a network of coastal defenses that protected Gibraltar. During World War I, the gun saw action against German submarines. After the war, the gun mount was upgraded to improve its capabilities.Decommissioned in the early 1970s, the 9.2-inch gun was removed and transferred to the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, England, in 1981.
