Discover more about Equestrian Statue of Alexander the Great

The Equestrian Statue of Alexander the Great is a prominent landmark in Athens, gracing the intersection of Vasilissis Olgas and Vasilissis Amalias Avenues. Unveiled in April 2019, the bronze statue depicts Alexander the Great riding his horse, Bucephalus. The statue portrays Alexander as a teenager, rather than a mature warrior. Created by Greek sculptor Yiannis Pappas, the statue was completed in 1973, but it wasn't until 2019 that it found its permanent home in the Greek capital. The placement was delayed for decades due to bureaucratic reasons and political sensitivities. The cost of the installation was covered by the sculptor's family. Alexander the Great (356-323 BC) was the king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. Tutored by Aristotle, he became one of history's most successful military commanders, creating an empire stretching from Greece to northwestern India. Military academies worldwide still teach his tactics.
