Discover more about Choragic Monument of Lysicrates

The Choragic Monument of Lysicrates, located in the heart of Athens, is a captivating reminder of the city's rich theatrical history. Built in 335/334 BC by Lysicrates, a 'choregos' or wealthy sponsor of dramatic performances, the monument commemorated his winning performance at the Theatre of Dionysus. Choregos were wealthy Athenian citizens who undertook the public service of funding the expenses and preparations of dramatic and musical performances during festivals. The monument itself is a circular structure of Pentelic marble, set on a high, squared podium. It stands 6.5 meters (21 ft) high with a diameter of approximately 3 meters (9 ft). It is historically significant as the first known use of the Corinthian architectural order on the exterior of a building. The frieze depicts scenes from the life of the god Dionysus, in whose honor the dramatic games were held. Originally, a bronze tripod, the prize awarded to Lysicrates, was placed atop the monument. Over the centuries, the monument has undergone several transformations. In 1658, French Capuchin monks founded a monastery on the site, incorporating the monument into their library. The monks called it the 'Lantern of Demosthenes'. During the Greek War of Independence, the monastery was destroyed, and the monument was damaged. Restoration work was carried out in the late 1870s under the supervision of French architects. Today, the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates stands in a small garden on Lysikratous Square, surrounded by cafes and shops. It is a popular stop for tourists exploring the Plaka district and a testament to the enduring legacy of ancient Athens.
