Discover more about Base of the Statue of Athena Promachos

The Base of the Statue of Athena Promachos, situated on the Acropolis in the area known as Zeus' Triangle, is a reminder of ancient Athens' grandeur. The colossal bronze statue of Athena, meaning 'leading warrior', was crafted by the famed sculptor Pheidias in the 5th century BC. Dedicated to Athena, the city's patron goddess of war and wisdom, the statue was a symbol of Athenian strength and gratitude for their victories in the Persian Wars. Standing at an estimated 9 meters tall including the pedestal, the statue dominated the Acropolis. Ancient accounts suggest that the gleam of Athena's spear and helmet crest were visible to sailors rounding Cape Sounion. The statue likely depicted Athena in a calm, standing pose, wearing a belted robe, holding a shield in one hand and a spear (or possibly a Nike figure) in the other. The shield was said to be decorated with scenes from the Centauromachy. The statue was moved to Constantinople in the 5th century AD and was eventually destroyed in 1204 AD. Today, only the repaired base remains. Despite the absence of the statue, the base offers a powerful connection to the past, inviting visitors to reflect on Athens' rich history and cultural significance.
