Discover more about Venetian Shipyards / Vechi

The Venetian Shipyards, also known as the 'Neoria,' stand as a testament to Heraklion's Venetian past. Constructed between the 15th and 17th centuries, these shipyards were a vital part of Venice's military and economic strategy in the Eastern Mediterranean. The complex originally consisted of 19 shipyards divided into three sections: Arsenali Antichi, Arsenali Vechi, and Arsenali Nuovi. These structures were used for the construction, maintenance, and storage of Venetian galleys. Today, visitors can see parts of five shipyards from the Vechi and Nuovi sections. The shipyards feature elongated, domed rooms that once housed the ships. Although some of the original structures were destroyed in the early 20th century to make way for a seaside road, the remaining sections have been undergoing restoration to host cultural events and exhibitions. Located in the old Venetian harbor, opposite the Koules Fortress, the shipyards offer a glimpse into the impressive engineering and architectural skills of the Venetians. Nearby, visitors can also find the water tank of Zane and the salt warehouse, which further highlight the area's historical significance.
