Knossos Palace: Unearthing Minoan Civilization

Knossos Palace, located a few kilometers south of Heraklion, Crete, is the island's largest and most significant Bronze Age archaeological site. As the ceremonial and political center of the Minoan civilization, it offers a captivating glimpse into Europe's oldest city. The palace complex dates back to around 1900 BCE and was the heart of Minoan society for centuries. Visitors can explore the multi-story palace, which features an intricate layout, impressive architecture, and vibrant frescoes. Highlights include the Throne Room, believed to be the seat of King Minos; the Queen's Megaron, adorned with the iconic Dolphin fresco; the Grand Staircase; and the expansive Central Court. The palace is also connected with thrilling legends, such as the Minotaur and the myth of the Labyrinth, as well as the story of Daedalus and Icarus.Excavations at Knossos began in 1878 and were later systematically carried out by Sir Arthur Evans, who dedicated 35 years to the project. His work revealed a sophisticated Bronze Age culture that dominated the Aegean between 1600 and 1400 BCE. While some of Evans's reconstructions are debated, they offer an immersive experience and a glimpse into ancient Minoan life. Today, Knossos draws over a million visitors each year, making it one of the most visited archaeological sites in Greece.
